Can the elusive O-Shot really improve women\u2019s sex lives? Dr. Shari Caplan explains.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you want to make your privates sparkle?\u201d asks Dr. Shari Caplan<\/a>, MD, CCFP, FCFP, FAARM. As the medical director of Toronto\u2019s Vitality MD, an integrative medical lifestyle centre and medi-spa, it\u2019s a question that comes with a long backstory. In her time as a physician, her patients\u2019 sex lives have always been a hot topic. \u201cIn my line of work, one of the biggest complaints I hear from women is how they\u2019ve lost their libido <\/a>and want it back. While there are a ton of options that help men deal with this issue, there hasn\u2019t been any for women until more recently,\u201d says Dr. Caplan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enter the O-Shot (yes, we\u2019re talking about orgasms), a patented, non-surgical treatment that promises increased sexual desire, arousal, and pleasure, as well as vaginal lubrication. Developed nearly a decade ago by an American doctor, Charles Runels, who wondered if the same procedure used to rejuvenate the skin on women\u2019s faces \u2014 the vampire facelift \u2014 would have similar results if used on the vagina. \u201cThe treatment uses platelet-rich plasma retrieved from blood taken from the arm. It\u2019s then injected around the vagina, clitoris, and G-spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It regrows cells to help rejuvenate sensitivity, lubrication, desire, and the ability to have that big O,\u201d says Dr. Caplan. \u201cBefore, all we could do was restore hormones that were out of whack. For example, we could add testosterone, estrogen, or progesterone, but some women don\u2019t like the effects that some of those can produce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For best results, we recommend two O-Shots; after the first session, which takes about 45 minutes, it is repeated a month or so later. There\u2019s no downtime post-shot and results are usually felt within two weeks to six months. (While Dr. Caplan\u2019s clinic is currently only seeing pre-screened patients due to COVID-19, they are actively seeing new patients virtually for hormone restoration, wellness, and consultations for the O-Shot.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since she began offering the procedure last year, Dr. Caplan says it\u2019s been pretty popular with the post-baby, perimenopausal, and menopausal crowd, but also with those who feel like their sex life is subpar. Success rates have<\/p>\n\n\n\n

been exceedingly favorable \u2014 those who have had it attest to its many benefits. Among other accolades, patients consistently report stronger, longer-lasting orgasms. \u201cIf better sex isn\u2019t reason enough, there are other good reasons for getting the shot \u2014 it can work wonders for women suffering from stress incontinence, painful intercourse, and discomfort caused by vaginal dryness, as well as improve aesthetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Words of praise from other women aside, Dr. Caplan doesn\u2019t believe in offering her patients procedures she doesn\u2019t truly believe in. Not only does she recommend the shot, but she\u2019s also personally tried it. \u201cI can vouch for it,\u201d she laughs. \u201cI have to say, since getting the shot, my libido, sensitivity, and dryness have definitely improved. Women deserve to have their libidos restored and to enjoy an active sex life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
